When google was founded it needed to set itself apart as the search engine of choice in the wild west of the internet. The way google set itself above the rest is by putting emphasis on the number and quality of backlinks to a website. It used the concept of - if a website is being mentioned a lot, it's probably relevant. That's why at least on google, backlinks are especially important.
One thing a lot of people don't know is just because you have a backlink doesn't mean its good for your site. Google calculates a domain authority score and a spam score for your website when ranking and if a spam website links to your website it is bad for your rating. If a website with a higher domain authority links to your website that can help your ranking a lot, but if the domain authority is lower it can potentially
hurt you rating especially if it's really low or isn't even indexed by google!
